On Wednesday, April 7, 1999, The Washington State Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union delivered its official endorsement of Initiative 46 to Free Speech Seattle.
In its endorsement, the ACLU states it endorses the initiative because it provides opportunities for a valuable function in a democratic society.
Kathleen Taylor, Executive Director, said, "The ACLU endorses the initiative because it would provide opportunities for people to communicate messages to others -- a valuable function in a democratic society."
The endorsement by the ACLU adds to the current buzz surrounding the I-46 campaign. I-46 would end Seattle's prohibition against postering on public light and utility poles, opening again an exciting and vibrant public media resource.
Over 30 local businesses have made petitions available in their stores so far. The Free Speech Seattle website http://www.freespeechseattle.org/ archives dozens of recent press clippings. I-46 promoters have been asked to speak at everything from Hempfest benefits to Bellevue Art Museum openings.
The next Free Speech Seattle benefit, featuring Burning Airlines, will be held Wednesday, April 21 at 4 p.m. at the Hi*Score Arcade, 612 E. Pine, Seattle. The concert costs $3 with all proceeds going to Free Speech Seattle. Burning Airlines, currently on their Spring 1999 US tour, will be playing the Breakroom that same evening, but wanted to do an all ages show and support Initiative 46. On April 23 Spork Records presents Point Birds and Bend Sinister also at The Hi*Score Arcade.
Free Speech Seattle has scheduled two public rallies. The first is May 22 at Victor Steinbrueck Park (Pike Place Market). The second is June 12 at Westlake Park (4th & Pine). Bands and speakers to be announced.
