Free Speech Seattle plans two upcoming rallies
May 13, 1999

The group behind I-46, the Seattle initiative to repeal the anti-postering ordinance, plans to make a little "music in the park" with two upcoming rallies.

The first, on Saturday, May 22, will be at Victor Steinbrueck Park, next to the Pike Place Market. The second rally will be held Saturday, June 12 at Westlake Park. Organizers say the first rally will be feature "mellower" music while the second will feature rock and hip hop from local musicians.

"We wanted to show what a diverse music scene this city has," said Thor Stephens who coordinates the campaign's signature gathering efforts at clubs and concerts. "Some people have this idea that we're just a group of punk rockers, but that couldn't be further from the truth."

Treasurer Ben Livingston agrees. "As someone whose radio dial is stuck on the jazz station, I look forward to surprising people who think any rally we hold would simply be a cacophony of distorted guitars."

Playing at the May 22 event are Very Special Forces, m(yoo)-zik, Kultur Shock, Marting Totusek, and Daughters of Joy. Guest speakers will also be on hand.

The June 12 rally will feature music from Hang Fire Disaster, Tribute, Silver Shadow, Artis The Spoon Man, Jim Page, Portrait of Poverty, 1848, Us of All, The Idiots, Left Justified, ROHT, and local DJs. Speakers include filmmaker Karl Krogstad; Vivian McPeak, who is challenging the poster ban in the courts; Guerry Hodderson from the Freedom Socialist Party; and Tim Crowley, Campaign Manager for I-46.
