There are less restrictive solutions to the poster ban
It is no surprise that City Attorney Mark Sidran never sent out a press release when his office fined a person for a lost cat or a yard sale. In the wake of the campaign to end the current ban on postering, it is clear that Sidran is using his office for some high-profile campaigning to maintain the current ban. It is a shame that Seattle, a city with a rich political and artistic history, has put such an overbroad limitation on free speech.
Postering is not a problem in most of the city. In areas where overpostering can be a problem, the city can respond with much less restrictive solutions. High-traffic areas can be the site of kiosks.
Postering can have specific height limits. There is no need to totally restrict the First Amendment rights of everyone in order to solve some of the minor problems associated with postering.
The postering ban should be repealed.
