Speech Protest

With about two weeks to go, supporters of Initiative 46 are beefing up their drive for the 19,000 signatures needed to get the measure, a repeal of Seattle's postering ban, on the ballot. (At last count, there were 13,000 signatures.)

Things haven't gone smoothly. Not only was campaign manager Tim Crowley hassled at Seattle Center; but Nic Warmenhoven, who was hawking his petition at the University District Farmers Market, was asked to pipe down or leave.

Warmenhoven did leave.

However, he returned with duct tape over his mouth and a homemade sandwich board with this message: "Chris Curtis (the market's director) threw me out for my political speech. I'm back, silent. Support free speech. Repeal the poster ban."

To Curtis' credit, she later signed his petition. She had her husband snap a picture of her standing beside Warmenhoven and his sandwich board.
